Compatibility
Is this person right for you?
Chemistry fades. Looks change. The only thing that lasts is compatibility. Here's how to tell if someone has the fundamentals.
The chemistry trap
Chemistry is real. It's the immediate attraction, the electricity, the feeling that you can't stop thinking about them. But chemistry is also the most unreliable predictor of long-term compatibility.
Chemistry can exist with someone who doesn't share your values, wants different things from life, or treats you poorly. You can have amazing physical attraction with someone you're fundamentally incompatible with.
The real question isn't: "Do I feel chemistry?" It's: "Is this person actually compatible with me?" And that requires a different kind of honesty.

Move beyond chemistry to understand actual compatibility.
The real compatibility checklist
Values Alignment
Do you agree on what matters? Family, money, work-life balance, honesty, kindness? You don't need identical values, but you need fundamental agreement on the big things. If you want kids and they don't, that's not something chemistry fixes.
Life Goals
Are you heading in the same general direction? You don't need identical paths, but you need compatible destinations. Someone chasing career ambition in a big city might be incompatible with someone who wants to settle down in a small town, no matter how much you like them.
Emotional Stability
Are they regulated? Can they handle stress without drama? Do they take responsibility for their actions or blame everyone else? This matters more than you think. Emotional stability is teachable; it's about willingness to grow.
How They Treat You (and Others)
Kind people are kind to everyone. If they're rude to servers, dismissive of exes, or mean to people "beneath" them, that's a real problem. How they treat you during conflict matters. Do they respect your boundaries? Do they take your feelings seriously?
Communication
Can they have difficult conversations? Do they shut down, get defensive, or escape into silence? Good relationships require being able to talk about problems without it becoming a war. This is learnable, but they need to be willing.
Self-Awareness
Do they understand themselves? Can they admit mistakes? Do they recognize their patterns? Self-awareness is the foundation for growth. Without it, they'll repeat the same patterns indefinitely.
Green flags vs. red flags
Green Flags
- ✓They ask about you and remember details
- ✓They admit mistakes and apologize
- ✓They follow through on what they say
- ✓They support your goals and ambitions
- ✓They're honest, even when it's uncomfortable
- ✓They show up consistently
Red Flags
- ✗They lie, even about small things
- ✗They blame others for everything
- ✗They're disrespectful to your boundaries
- ✗They become different when drinking/using
- ✗They're controlling or manipulative
- ✗They don't respect your time or feelings
The bottom line
Someone can be amazing and still not be right for you. That's okay. It doesn't make them bad or you picky. Compatibility isn't about finding a perfect person—it's about finding someone whose imperfections don't collide with your deal-breakers.
Trust yourself. If you're consistently unhappy, if they consistently disrespect you, if your values are fundamentally misaligned—that's not something love fixes. Love amplifies the good, but it can't change core incompatibility.
The right person is the one you can be yourself with, who respects you, who shares your values, and who's willing to grow with you. That person exists. Don't settle for chemistry alone.
Trust your clarity. Know who's right.
